Why is it so easy to create bad habits but difficult to create good ones?
Bad habits often provide immediate gratification or relief from discomfort. For example,
eating junk food or procrastinating may provide instant pleasure or relief from stress. On
the other hand, good habits like exercising or studying often require effort and discipline
upfront with delayed rewards in terms of health or long-term achievements.
Bad habits often develop when we engage in activities mindlessly, without consciously
considering their long-term impact. Breaking this cycle requires self-control, willpower,
mindfulness and intentional effort to replace negative behaviours with positive ones.
When creating good habits, it is essential to set SMART goals. Knowing what your goal is
will help you form your healthy eating and exercise habits without feeling stressed and
anxious. Make sure your goal is specific, describing exactly what you want to achieve. It is
important that you can measure the progress and that the set goal is realistic and
achievable. State, how relevant and important it is in your life. And lastly, give yourself a
timeframe for when you want to achieve it.
Use a journal to record your workouts, meals, water intake, feelings, emotions,
affirmations, positive quotes... This will help you track your progress and keep you
motivated.
While it may seem challenging to cultivate good habits, it's not impossible. With
awareness, commitment and consistent effort, you can gradually replace bad habits with
healthier alternatives and create positive routines that contribute to your well-being and
success.
